FiveM Escrow vs Open Source Scripts: Which One Should You Buy?
Escrow or open source? A clear breakdown of how FiveM's asset escrow works, what you can and can't change in each version, and how to pick the right edition for your server.
Most premium FiveM resources are now sold in two editions: Escrow and Open Source. The script does the same job in both. The difference is how much of its code you can see and change, and what that freedom costs. Picking the wrong one usually means either paying for source code you never touch, or hitting a wall the first time you need a custom change.
This guide explains how each edition works, where the real trade-offs are, and how to choose.
What "Escrow" Means in FiveM
Escrow versions are protected by Cfx.re Asset Escrow, the official encryption system built into FiveM. When you buy an escrowed resource through Tebex, it's granted to the Cfx.re account you used at checkout, and you download it from the Cfx.re Portal.
A few things follow from that:
- The core logic files are encrypted, so you can't read or edit them.
- The resource only runs on servers whose license key belongs to the account that owns the asset.
- Creators can leave chosen files unencrypted, which is why escrowed scripts almost always ship with an editable
config.luaand locale files.
In practice, escrow covers what most servers need. You can change prices, coordinates, keybinds, colours, texts and feature toggles from the config, and updates are a simple drop-in replacement.
What You Get with Open Source
The open source edition contains the full, unencrypted code: client, server and NUI (the HTML/CSS/JS interface). Nothing is locked to a specific license key, so you can:
- Rewrite or extend features the config doesn't expose.
- Integrate the script deeply with your own framework fork, inventory or custom systems.
- Restyle the interface completely, not just swap colours.
- Debug issues yourself instead of waiting on the developer.
The trade-off is responsibility. Once you edit the source, moving to a new version means merging your changes into it, and anything you break is yours to fix.
Escrow vs Open Source at a Glance
- Price: escrow is the cheaper option. Open source usually costs around twice as much, because you're buying the code itself.
- Customization: escrow is limited to what the config exposes; open source has no such limit.
- Updates: escrow updates are drop-in; open source updates need merging if you've modified files.
- Server binding: escrow runs only on the purchasing account's license keys; open source isn't bound to one.
- Redistribution: neither edition may be resold or shared publicly. The license still applies to open source code.
When Escrow Is the Right Choice
Choose escrow if you want a polished feature running quickly and the config covers your needs. Most roleplay servers fall into this group: they adjust prices, positions, texts and branding, and never need to touch the logic. Escrow also keeps you on the developer's update path with no merge work.
When Open Source Is Worth It
Open source pays off when you have a developer on your team (or plan to hire one) and you know you'll change behaviour, not just settings. Typical cases:
- You run a heavily customized framework and need the script to talk to your own exports and events.
- You want a fully unique UI that matches your server's brand, not a recolour.
- Performance matters on your server and you want to profile and optimize the code yourself. Our script optimization guide covers what to look for.
Frameworks Still Matter
Edition aside, check framework support before buying. A script built for QBCore won't run on ESX just because you bought the open source edition; open source only makes porting it possible. If you're still deciding on a framework, read our QBCore vs ESX comparison.
Choosing an Edition on Code X Art
On our products page, each script is listed once and you pick the edition on the product itself, Escrow or Open Source, with the price of each shown right there. You can also filter the catalog by edition to see only open source scripts. Not sure which edition fits your plans? Contact us and tell us what you want to change; we'll tell you honestly whether the config already covers it.
